A reliable system for quick and easy drug screening and phenotype characterization under both day and night lighting conditions. The system consists of a two-dimensional square frame (X and Y axes), a stand, and a control unit. Each frame is equipped with 16 x 16 infrared beams for optimal subject detection. The system is fully modular: each frame can be used to assess general activity (of one or more animals), locomotor and stereotypic movements, rearing or exploration with the hole-board option. The infrared photocell system can be set with various levels of sensitivity to adapt the frames to the type of animal (rats, mice). It can also be set to ignore beams obstructed by objects (e.g., feeder, drinking bottle, etc.).
