A study presented at the October 2023 congress of the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">American Association for Laboratory Animal Science<\/span><\/span> (AALAS) now provides new experimental data to support this recommendation. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"746\" data-end=\"1003\">In the experiment, <strong data-start=\"764\" data-end=\"842\">all ten <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Mus musculus<\/span><\/span> mice of strain C57BL\/6<\/strong> subjected to daily administration with metal gavage needles for five consecutive days showed <strong data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"1000\">inflammation and necrosis of the esophagus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1132\">In contrast, <strong data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1040\">only one in ten<\/strong> of the mice treated with <strong data-start=\"1063\" data-end=\"1093\">plastic gavage tubes<\/strong> showed signs of inflammation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1224\">The authors of the study, led by <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Jessica Herrod<\/span><\/span>, emphasize:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1224\"><em>&#8220;When designing studies that require oral administration by gavage in mice, researchers should consider using flexible polypropylene gavage needles to improve animal welfare.
