solution for <strong data-start=\"552\" data-end=\"606\">oral administration of compounds in mice and rats.<\/strong> Compared with traditional rigid stainless steel probes, they offer several advantages in terms of <strong data-start=\"704\" data-end=\"753\">safety, ease of use and animal welfare.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"756\" data-end=\"902\">In this guide we look at what they are, how to choose the correct size, and some best practices for use in <strong data-start=\"872\" data-end=\"901\">rodent oral dosing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"904\" data-end=\"907\">\n<h1 data-section-id=\"1gw4odf\" data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"951\">What are FTPs<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"1093\">The <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/2biol.com\/prodotti\/instech-ftp\/\"><strong>FTPs<\/strong><strong data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"981\">(plastic feeding tubes)<\/strong><\/a><\/span> are probes made of <strong data-end=\"1151\">Luer lock or slip fit<\/strong> for connection to the syringe<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"3jd5xw\" data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1257\">\n<p data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1257\">A <strong data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1211\">hose<\/strong> available in different lengths and diameters<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1hv9126\" data-start=\"1258\" data-end=\"1340\">\n<p data-start=\"1260\" data-end=\"1340\">A <strong data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1293\">soft rounded tip<\/strong> designed to reduce the risk of injury.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1342\" data-end=\"1485\">Unlike traditional metal probes, these probes are <strong data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1421\">disposable<\/strong>, so they do not require washing or autoclaving.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1490\">\n<h1 data-section-id=\"9s7kah\" data-start=\"1492\" data-end=\"1556\">Why use plastic probes instead of steel probes<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1687\">More and more laboratories are switching from metal probes to <strong data-start=\"1624\" data-end=\"1655\">flexible gavage probes<\/strong>, mainly for three reasons:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1825\"><strong data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1725\">Increased safety for the animal<\/strong><br data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1728\">The soft tip reduces the risk of accidental insertion into the trachea during the procedure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"1935\"><strong data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"1863\">Lower risk of contamination<\/strong><br data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"1866\">Being disposable, they eliminate the need for cleaning and sterilization.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"2073\"><strong data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"1968\">Improved operational management<\/strong><br data-start=\"1968\" data-end=\"1971\">They simplify daily work in laboratories and reduce the risk of contamination between samples.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2075\" data-end=\"2255\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instechlabs.com\/blog\/significantly-more-esophageal-inflammation-found-in-mice-dosed-with-metal-gavage-tubes-than-plastic\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Recent studies<\/strong><\/span><\/a> also indicate that the use of flexible probes represents an <strong data-start=\"2156\" data-end=\"2222\">improvement in animal welfare practices (refinement)<\/strong> data-start=\"2315\" data-end=\"2363\">The choice of probe depends mainly on:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2467\">\n<li data-section-id=\"jm1t16\" data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2388\">\n<p data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2388\"><strong data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2388\">weight of the animal<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"hg8wf4\" data-start=\"2389\" data-end=\"2437\">\n<p data-start=\"2391\" data-end=\"2437\"><strong data-start=\"2391\" data-end=\"2437\">viscosity of the solution to be administered<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li esophagus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2469\" data-end=\"2606\">There is no such thing as a universal size: it is often useful to <strong data-start=\"2522\" data-end=\"2545\">test multiple options<\/strong> to find the one best suited to your application.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2608\" data-end=\"2611\">\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1nygkj2\" data-start=\"2613\" data-end=\"2637\">Probe length<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2639\" data-end=\"2747\">The ideal length is approximately the <strong data-start=\"2696\" data-end=\"2746\">distance between the animal&#8217;s mouth and sternum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2749\" data-end=\"2812\">Using the correct length helps reduce the risk of:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2814\" data-end=\"2876\">\n<li data-section-id=\"wszgkp\" data-start=\"2814\" data-end=\"2843\">\n<p data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"2843\"><strong data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"2843\">liquid aspiration<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li esophagus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"2878\" data-end=\"2881\">\n<h2 data-section-id=\"vojw9k\" data-start=\"2883\" data-end=\"2902\">Gauge (diameter)<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2904\" data-end=\"2958\">The <strong data-start=\"2907\" data-end=\"2928\">probe gauge<\/strong> should be chosen according to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"3013\">\n<li data-section-id=\"xy8mu8\" data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"2987\">\n<p data-start=\"2962\" data-end=\"2987\">size of rodent<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"j8pmb\" data-start=\"2988\" data-end=\"3013\">\n<p data-start=\"2990\" data-end=\"3013\">viscosity of the compound.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3015\" data-end=\"3083\">More viscous solutions generally require <strong data-start=\"3061\" data-end=\"3082\">larger diameters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3085\" data-end=\"3088\">\n<h1 data-section-id=\"1rzfmyq\" data-start=\"3090\" data-end=\"3117\">Most commonly used dimensions<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"3119\" data-end=\"3184\">Below are some general directions used in the workshops.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"ynr3hg\" data-start=\"3186\" data-end=\"3194\">Mice<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3308\">\n<li data-section-id=\"xlsory\" data-start=\"3196\" data-end=\"3221\">\n<p data-start=\"3198\" data-end=\"3221\"> <strong data-start=\"3198\" data-end=\"3209\">&lt; 20 g:<\/strong> FTP-22-25<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1tu35jg\" data-start=\"3222\" data-end=\"3260\">\n<p data-start=\"3224\" data-end=\"3260\"><strong data-start=\"3224\" data-end=\"3236\">20-30 g:<\/strong> FTP-20-30 \/ FTP-20-34<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"i447uw\" data-start=\"3261\" data-end=\"3308\">\n<p data-start=\"3263\" data-end=\"3308\"> <strong data-start=\"3263\" data-end=\"3274\">&gt; 30 g:<\/strong> FTP-20-38 (most common size)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3310\" data-end=\"3400\">For particularly viscous solutions, a <strong data-start=\"3375\" data-end=\"3399\">polyurethane probe<\/strong> may be preferable.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"78epfg\" data-start=\"3402\" data-end=\"3411\">Rats<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3413\" data-end=\"3584\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1fpv6gm\" data-start=\"3413\" data-end=\"3451\">\n<p data-start=\"3415\" data-end=\"3451\"> <strong data-start=\"3415\" data-end=\"3427\">&lt; 100 g:<\/strong> FTP-18-30 \/ FTP-22-38<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"192ez44\" data-start=\"3452\" data-end=\"3492\">\n<p data-start=\"3454\" data-end=\"3492\"><strong data-start=\"3454\" data-end=\"3468\">100-200 g:<\/strong> FTP-18-38 \/ FTP-18-50<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"9yzqgw\" data-start=\"3493\" data-end=\"3546\">\n<p data-start=\"3495\" data-end=\"3546\"><strong data-start=\"3495\" data-end=\"3509\">200-300 g:<\/strong> FTP-18-75 or polyurethane models<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"l29nop\" data-start=\"3547\" data-end=\"3584\">\n<p data-start=\"3549\" data-end=\"3584\"> <strong data-start=\"3549\" data-end=\"3561\">&gt; 300 g:<\/strong> FTP-15-78 \/ FTP-15-100<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-section-id=\"ai5gt1\" data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3631\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" immobilization<\/strong> is essential to safely perform <strong data-start=\"3711\" data-end=\"3743\">oral gavage in mice and rats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3746\" data-end=\"3858\">Before the procedure, it is advisable to <strong data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3827\">accustom the animals to handling in<\/strong> order to reduce stress.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"ynr3hg\" data-start=\"3860\" data-end=\"3868\">Mice<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3870\" data-end=\"4050\">The rat is grasped gently at the base of the tail and then <strong data-start=\"3947\" data-end=\"3991\">clamped by the neck skin (scruff)<\/strong> between thumb and forefinger, keeping it upright.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"78epfg\" data-start=\"4052\" data-end=\"4061\">Rats<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4063\" data-end=\"4211\">The rat is grabbed by the <strong data-start=\"4095\" data-end=\"4114\">skin of the neck<\/strong> and lifted while keeping the body upright, preventing it from prying with its hind legs.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4213\" data-end=\"4216\">\n<h1 data-section-id=\"18tj4uy\" data-start=\"4218\" data-end=\"4243\">Oral gavage technique<\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"4245\" data-end=\"4279\">After immobilizing the animal:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"4281\" data-end=\"4502\">\n<li data-section-id=\"16wpqbz\" data-start=\"4281\" data-end=\"4373\">\n<p data-start=\"4284\" data-end=\"4373\">Insert the probe <strong data-start=\"4302\" data-end=\"4359\">slightly to the right or left of the midline of<\/strong> the mouth<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ujrokj\" data-start=\"4374\" data-end=\"4410\">\n<p data-start=\"4377\" data-end=\"4410\">advance the probe without forcing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"fyqseu\" data-start=\"4411\" data-end=\"4456\">\n<p data-start=\"4414\" data-end=\"4456\">administer the contents of the syringe<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"g3mqy\" data-start=\"4457\" data-end=\"4502\">\n<p data-start=\"4460\" data-end=\"4502\">Remove the probe and monitor the animal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"4504\" data-end=\"4668\"><strong data-start=\"4526\" data-end=\"4561\">There should be no resistance<\/strong> during insertion.
