Description

The rotating cage for spontaneous activity is a simple and inexpensive way to quantify the voluntary activity of rodents in the classic housing cage environment (Type IIL and III cages), with models available for both mice and rats. Measurements include distance traveled in both directions, number of wheel revolutions, average/minimum/maximum speed, acceleration, total time in the wheel, number of accesses, and can be displayed in statistical form or sorted by custom time periods. The system allows longitudinal monitoring and recording of parameters related to the voluntary exercise of an animal, which can freely decide the timing and intensity for extended periods of time (several days or weeks) in order to analyze differences in behavior and exercise patterns induced by drugs or surgical manipulations. Spontaneous activity wheels are an ideal tool for studies on drug screening, phenotyping, circadian rhythms, and neuromuscular diseases.
