Instech’s Rodent Dose Puller (RDP) automatically fills syringes during rodent oral dosing studies. The device receives the dose directly from the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) once the animal has been scanned, then fills the syringe more accurately than can be done by hand and without the possibility of error. This tool greatly speeds up the dosing process by partially filling the syringe while drawing the next animal, allowing two things to be done at the same time. Most importantly, the RDP does all the work of syringe withdrawal, reducing fatigue and the possibility of thumb injury. The RDP unit does not come with an agitation plate as shown in the photos and video.

Significant improvements for large-scale dosing studies in rodents.

The RDP is the result of a multi-year development effort in collaboration with a large CRO. The project began with the primary goal of protecting technicians from thumb injuries. For example, ergonomics experts say that a human thumb should not pull more than 20 doses of oil per day using a 5-mL syringe; this is not possible when dosing studies involve hundreds of rats. Another important consideration that moved Instech toward the development of RDP is the following: oral gavage of rodents is a delicate technique that is learned and perfected over years and with thousands of repetitions: trying to solve the ergonomic problem with a peristaltic pump would lead to a substantial change in the procedure with a potential danger for the animal as well.
