The VAB™ for mice is a transcutaneous port that provides rapid, aseptic access to a catheterized vessel with a syringe for intermittent access or with a ligature for continuous access. Applications include infusion, blood draw, and intravenous self-administration. There is a choice of three different types of discs that hold the button in place under the skin:
- 14 mm polyester felt (VABM1B)-this is the standard configuration; the fabric will grow into the felt over time, securing it in place.
- 10 mm polyester felt (VABM1VB) – smaller felt for smaller etching or smaller mice.
- 14 mm silicone mesh (VABM1BSM) – preferred by Jackson Laboratory with its wide range of strains, some of which do not tolerate felt.
The catheter connectors are subcutaneous, under the felt:
- 25ga (standard) – for 2Fr polyurethane, including jugular vein and carotid artery catheters
- 22ga – for polyurethane 3Fr
